Pest Control – Invasive Species part 2

By Stephanie McIntyre Invasive species are a potential menace to people and to our native species. While some pests from foreign lands can be managed naturally, or by effective control methods – others are very difficult to control. With few, if any, natural predators, and in some cases no present means of effective control; some of these out of town uninvited pests threaten our landscape, industry, and even much of our country as we know it. Here are two of them that have become particularly problematic. Japanese beetles – cause large scale plant destruction for farmers, gardeners and homeowners, in both the adult and larval stages. This is a very different situation from that which exists in its native home of Japan, where natural predators help to control it. In Japan, intestinal parasites, nematodes, and several species of parasitic wasps and flies keep this voracious insect under control. But they are not here in numbers sufficient to manage our beetle problem. The problem with Japanese beetles isn’t that each one eats a lot, but that there are so many of them, and together they can devastate an areas’ plants. Starting at the top of a plant and eating their way down, they can leave a plant that looks like a green skeleton. The grubs on the other hand can ruin turf grasses, and damage many other plants by eating the roots. And the beetles aren’t that selective in what they will consume. They will eat hundreds of different plant species: damage from these insects totals in the hundreds of millions of dollars. It’s not hard to identify an adult beetle. They’re metallic green, about 3/8″ long with bronze wing covers (and usually there’s more than one). The grubs, which are only found by digging, are white and curled up and about 1″ long. Two of the natural controls from Japan, nematodes and Milky Spore disease can be purchased in this country, and applied to the ground. This can help to control grubs, and to a lesser extent adults since they must first go through the larval stage. But since beetles can fly in and out of feeding areas, these controls are only effective if surrounding homes use them as well. The natural pest control product, neem oil, is believed to repel Japanese beetles. Like any product that’s applied by spraying – it must be applied on a regular basis to replenish it. It is however less toxic than chemical sprays, for those who have children and pets, or would like to impact the environmental as little as possible. Fire ants – which are native to South America, have become a serious pest in some parts of the United States. They were inadvertently introduced into the U.S. in the 1930′s in Mobile, Alabama, and have since spread throughout the southeastern part of the country and California. These ants are pests because they deliver a painful and venomous sting that burns the unfortunate person who steps in their midst: and because their large mounds can damage plants and crops. Being stung by a fire ant is a particularly painful experience because of the way they deliver their stings. They will anchor themselves to a victim with their mandibles, and sting continuously until stopped. Fire ants will sometimes attack and kill small animals. They can be difficult to control, but there are products available to do so. There are both baits and insecticides designed to control fire ants on lawns and in yards. Also effective is a species of fly that’s native to S. America, which lays its eggs in an ant’s head. When the young hatch, they eat the inside of the head and kill the ant. This species of fly, called the ant decapitating fly, has been successfully introduced in a number of states with a fire ant problem. However, not all introductions of it have been successful. The sting of the fire ant is painful and will usually form a bump similar to an acne outbreak a day later. The bites are a problem not only because they are irritating and unattractive but because they can also become infected. And some people are allergic to the venom from fire ants, and need emergency attention because of anaphylaxis. Stephanie McIntyre and Wendell Bryant are Internet developers. Fly Fishing and The Right Equipment!

By Jeffrey Ryall When fly fishing you need a calm temperament, be able to switch off and keep repeating the same technique without getting frustrated. This is half the battle, the other half is the right equipment. Of coarse you need sun glasses so you dont have to squint from the sun and maybe a hat but most importantly the tackle makes all the difference. When choosing a rod, should you go for a modern composite graphite rod or an old fashioned bamboo rod? Should you choose a rod for one particular water or setting or go with a multi purpose rod. All these factors will come into the equation when choosing a rod to cast your flies. Talking of flies, this is another area where choice is important. Do you go for a dry fly or go for an insect replica. The colour of the fly could also be important, is there a colour for morning and a different one for night. Another thing to think about is weather you want to learn how to tie your own flies or are you better off buying them already done. The choice of rod and fly could also affect the decision as to what line you will use. The type of line you use may be also be influenced by what fish you are fishing for, larger fish will need a heavier line as appose to smaller fish. You will have to decide on weather you want your line to float or sink, weather your fish feed on the surface or on the bottom. Some anglers are quite happy to use a bomber or swim feeder, just cast their line out and relax on the riverbank and wait. Fly fishing on the other hand is much more a hands on approach; you need to be fully concentrated on the task ahead of you. Tackle decisions can make the difference between having a fantastic day and having a ordinary day. Most fly fishermen take it very seriously; it takes patience, dedication and practice to become a good fly fisherman. Choosing the right rod can be very tricky, with lots of different people having different ideas. Below are a few choices to help you. Fibreglass- A large number of rods these days are made from fibreglass, whether they are for fly fishing or regular fishing. The main downside of fibreglass rods is that they are heavier than graphite or bamboo rods which in turn could make your arm tired at the end of the day. Despite this they are able to take a lot of punishment which makes them a popular choice. Bamboo- Many of the older fishermen will not here a bad word said about these rods. Of coarse this is just someones opinion, but they were one of the first rods to be made and are still being made today. There is a lot that goes into making a bamboo rod and for this reason they can tend to be one of the most expensive. Graphite- These tend to be quite stiff but that doesnt mean they are not effective. These rods give good flexibility and are quite strong. they give good performance and they can vary in price difference and quality. Reels are another important piece of equipment, the abel fly reel is considered one of the best around. A lot of parts are interchangeable from one reel to another making this a good choice. Also it does not matter if you are left or right handed as they can be converted easily from one to another. Treat Aches and Pains With Essential Oils

By James Brunton Its a long time since Frankincense and Myrrh came to the fore in the Bible, but these two things are becoming popular once more. This time as essential oils used to treat common aches and pains. This time, however, their names have been changed to the botanical versions. I think this is to let everyone know the plant species they come from. These are Boswellia carteri for Frankincense, and Commiphora myrrha for Myrrh. Both oils are derived from the resins that exude from the plants when they are damaged, and are now the main ingredients of some aromatherapy-based creams. A brief check of want the respective oils can do shows the basis for using them together in this way. Frankincense essential oil tones the skin, eases pain and numbness, while the aroma calms stress and tension. Myrrh essential oil fights inflammation, helps healing and kills infections. Together Frankincense and Myrrh or Boswellia and Commiphora give you the best of both worlds fight infection, ease pain and inflammation, and promote healing. And, at the same time their aromas help sooth and calm your anxious mind. (Remember the two-pronged attack of aromatherapy oils I mentioned before.) And, there are few, if any, side effects or untoward problems with rubbing them into your skin. Neither is toxic when diluted in a cream. So there you have it. A useful, healing cream with little chance of side effects that can help treat aches and pains of all types, including arthritis and rheumatism. And all by combining two essential oils from the aromatherapy range, oils that have been around for thousands of years. They arent alone either. Other essential oils are used to treat pain by adding them to warm baths, hot compresses or massaging them into the affected areas. Part of their action is the relaxation, calmness and soothing tensions associated with their use. But these two aromatherapy oils have direct actions on damaged and painful parts as well. It just goes to show that aromatherapy really does have a place in modern treatments. So, welcome back to Frankincense and Myrrh. Youve probably never been away. James Brunton has a range of booklets and articles to show you how effective all kinds of alternative therapies can be. Religious Celebrations

By Barry Hopkins Great Britain is a fantastically varied country with many religions worshipped regularly by its inhabitants. The main UK religions are: 1. Christianity 2. Islam 3. Hinduism 4. Sikhism 5. Judaism 6. Buddhist Click on our website to show a calendar of events for each religion. Whichever religion you follow, there are many annual or seasonal events to celebrate, and despite the sometimes huge differences between cultures and traditions, planning any party or celebration generally follows this guideline; You must ensure that the type of party you select is appropriate to the day; Holding a daytime party with food and drink would be completely unfair to Muslims during Ramadan, and a Pig Roast would be extremely offensive to those who belong to the Jewish faith, however a feast of Kosher food would be gratefully received! You will need to advise your caterers of any dietary requirements, and also consider the availability of alcohol; Sikhs dont drink alcohol, so again ensure that suitable alternatives are offered. Ask your caterer if Crockery & Linen hire is included in their quotation, otherwise you may need to hire this separately. Before booking these, also check with your venue as to whether you will need to hire additional tables and chairs. Pick your venue.. by this I mean for your celebration, not for worship! Some churches or temples have their own village halls or function rooms for hire at very reasonable rates, otherwise look at conference centres or hotels to provide a suitable setting. Marquees are very popular celebration venues, as they are easy to decorate and personalize to your own event. If you are having a Marquee, dont forget to also book the portable toilets!! Decoration is a large part of any sort of event; choose from Balloons, Banners, Streamers, Floral Decorations and Table Ware, through to Favours and colour co-ordinated stationery, such as table plans and place cards. To take the strain off yourselves, you could hire a venue decorator, or simply just browse our directory for suppliers! There are a huge amount of entertainments to choose from, childrens entertainers can include magicians, circus acts, bouncy castles and fairground rides. Admittedly, adults are also be delighted by these games and amusements, however for more grown up activities, you could book a comedian, hypnotist or look-a-like. Music suitable for all ages include Discos, Jazz or Tribute Bands, or a perhaps you would prefer a more sedate atmospherical harmony by booking a Harpist, piper or singer to serenade your guests. Click here to see our article on choosing your DJ & Discos. There are also many original bands available who may be suitable to your occasion, you could ask your local place of worship if they have a choir or similar. You may wish to consider hiring a stage, dance-floor, lighting rig or PA system to make your party really stand out! Dont forget all the other essential requirements, such as insurance and cleaners for the morning after! You may wish to contemplate hiring a professional photographer to capture your event. Remember your photographs could be posted online or in newsletters to entice fellow worshippers to join your forthcoming celebrations! Are Blacks the Cursed Descendants of Ham?

By Vc Veasey First the text of the curse then my commentary, Genesis chapter 9 20 Noah was the first tiller of the soil. He planted a vineyard; 21 and he drank of the wine, and became drunk, and lay uncovered in his tent. 22 And Ham, the father of Canaan, saw the nakedness of his father, and told his two brothers outside. 23 Then Shem and Japheth took a garment, laid it upon both their shoulders, and walked backward and covered the nakedness of their father; their faces were turned away, and they did not see their fathers nakedness. 24 When Noah awoke from his wine and knew what his youngest son had done to him, 25 he said, “Cursed be Canaan; A slave of slaves shall he be to his brothers.” 26 He also said, “Blessed by the Lord my God be Shem; and let Canaan be his slave. God enlarge Japheth, and let him dwell in the tents of Shem; and let Canaan be his slave.” (Revised Standard Edition) My Commentary Now lets see what this infamous curse is all about. Well it appears that Noah got drunk and passed-out naked in his tent (Verse 21). Ham saw him lying there drunk asleep and told his brothers about it and they covered him with a garment (Verse 22). So it seems that Noah spoke this curse because he was mad that his son, Ham, saw him naked. I guess he was pretty uptight about being seen naked by Ham but not about drinking so much that he’d passed-out and was lying there in the nude where anyone could see him, including Shem and Japheth, Ham just happened to see him first. Now heres where the story gets interesting, Noahs mad at his son, Ham, but he curses his grandson, Canaan (Verse 25). He says “”Cursed be Canaan; a slave of slaves shall you be to your brothers.” Why is he cursing his innocent grandson, Canaan, who’s not in this story at all up to this point and whos only mentioned here in passing (Verse 22). And whats so bad about being seen naked that hed want to curse anybody anyway, especially his innocent grandson? Ham committed this “horrible” offense so why doesnt he curse Ham instead? Noah was drunk; so maybe he intended to curse Ham but mistakenly cursed Canaan. At any rate, the person who initially took the forbidden action in relation to Noah was Ham not Canaan. Some people say that seeing Noah naked wasn’t the real reason for his invoking the cursethat the real reason Canaan was cursed was because he sexually molested Noah while he was sleeping. Read the text for yourself folks; Verse 22 And Ham, the father of Canaan, saw the nakedness of his father, and told his two brothers outside. 23 Then Shem and Japheth took a garment, laid it upon both their shoulders, and walked backward and covered the nakedness of their father; their faces were turned away, and they did not see their fathers nakedness. Do you see anything in the text about Canaan molesting his grandfather, Noah? Does it seem to you that the real reason for the curse was that Ham saw Noah naked? If seeing Noah naked wasn’t the reason why does the writer emphasizes the fact that Ham saw his father’s nakedness and Shem and Japheth didn’t? Anyway, the innocent Canaan received the curse not Ham. Let’s move on. Lets dissect the historical after shocks of this curse. White supremacists and their sympathizers say that Ham was cursed by God with blackness and as a result all of Hams descendants (Black People) are cursed as well and are destined to be slaves. (A good justification for enslaving Africans during the European slave trade.) But as you can see by the text thats not true, God doesnt curse anybody Noah does. (Verse 24-25). Noah doesnt curse Ham he curses his innocent grandson, Canaan and text doesnt say that Ham or Canaan were cursed with blackness. Noah said in Verse 25, Canaan shall be a slave of slaves to his brothers and in Verses 26-27, to his Uncles Shem and Japheth not to white supremacists or any other group. Now who are these brothers Canaan is cursed to be a slave to? Get out your bibles, scroll down to Genesis 10:6 where it lists the sons of Ham, his sons are listed as Cush, Egypt, Put, and Canaan. (This probably means that this story is metaphorical or mythological because these are all names of ancient civilizations in Africa, groups of people not individuals). These are the blacks who (according to the text) are the descendants of Ham; who historically, white racists say were cursed by God with blackness; but, againas you can see from the text thats not the case. God doesnt curse Ham or his sons with blackness but Noah does curse Canaan. So Canaan is cursed to be a slave to his brothers Cush, Egypt, and Put? Canaan is cursed to be a slave to the ancestors of the blacks? Not to mention that if Canaans brothers are blackthat means Canaan is black tooand since Ham, Shem and Japheth all have the same father and mother, its logical to conclude that Noah, his wife, Shem and Japheth are black as well. Remember Ham wasn’t cursed with blackness. So that means that if his sons are black..he’s black… his mother and father are black…and so are his brothers.Thats how absurd this whole thing about blacks being cursed with blackness is. Lets trace the descendants of the innocent cursed Canaan. Go to genesis 10:15-20 and youll see that the descendants of Canaan actually end up populating a large portion of whats now the Middle East. Canaan was the Promised Land (roughly were present day Israel is now) that Moses led the children of Israel to. And since the Israelites were the descendants of Canaans uncle, Shem, that means they actually fought their own relatives for possession the Promised Land. As I said earlier, if Ham was black, then the whole family of Noah was black, therefore by extension, Moses and the people he led out of Egypt were black. Not to mention that Egypt was also a descendant of Ham, where these children of Israel lived and intermingled for 400 hundred years! So if there were any cursed descendants of Ham it looks like they would have to be Canaans descendants. But againthe text doesnt say Canaans descendants were cursed just the innocent Canaan, (Verse 25-26). So what happened to the fabled curse on black people? Unless youre spiritually myopic, you can see from the text that this whole curse thing has just been ethnic propaganda, used for centuries to justify enslaving Africans and their descendants for economic gain and to help relieve the guilt of white Christians for participating in the slave trade. Generally speaking, this myth has allowed all whites to feel superior to blacks for no other reason than that they are white! According to the noted African American Historian and anthropologist, J.A Rogers, in his book “Nature Knows No Color Line” certain Jewish Rabbis in the first or second century A.D. taught that Ham was cursed with blackness for engaging in sex on the ark against Gods command. Heres another source of historical misinformation that help create the psychological climate that made it easier for various White Christian cultures to debase, abuse, and enslave blacks for social and economic gain. The myth that God “cursed” blacks made it easier for White Christians and others to engage in racist behaviors without feeling guilty about it. (Of course not all Whites or White Christians accepted this ideology or engaged in those behaviors and many were totally in opposition to any racist ideology) Blacks must have previously been very powerful and enviously admired in the cultural and religious history of the various White cultures of the world, for so much scorn to have been heaped on them starting in such ancient times. Ironically there are African-Americans who believe this myth about blacks being the “cursed Descendants of Ham” without ever researching it to see if it’s true or not! But that’s the way it is with those who are closed minded whether theyre White or Black. They never critique nor question if what they believe is true or not. They just accept it as true, because thats what they been taughtbut it’s been said we should seek to know the truth if want to free our minds of deception, ” And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free John 8:32 This piece is dedicated to all of you, who believed that blacks were the cursed descendants of Ham based on what you believed or thought that the Bible said about the subject…hopefully this has been an Enlightening Experience for you. Truth Is!

By Carol Ann Culbert Johnson Listening to one of my favorite songs, Truth Is by Fantasia, the American Idol winner, this article I had to write. Fantasia is talking about someone she let go, and the fact that she shouldnt have let him go in the first place. She ran into him, and she realized that she was still in love with him. I understand where Fantasia is coming from because I feel the same one. Every time I hear this song which is often, I find myself thinking about the man that is no longer in my life. This song brings back so many memories. I get into the song but an image of his face appears right in front of me. I began to think about the times we shared together, the good and the bad times. Sometimes this song makes me cry because the memories are so vivid, and I find myself weeping like a weeping willow bent on causing suffering to myself. I find myself missing this man, and wishing that our relationship could have stood the test of time; was able to survive when the bomb went off; the thunder hit the lightening, and the rain turned to snow. I feel so negative feeling so blue and down about myself. I wasnt enough for him. He just didnt love me enough to make our relationship work. I wasnt important in his eyes. Its a sad state of affairs to me because I really loved him, but if someone doesnt love you back, its time to move on. Although he had some crazy ways, there were times when I liked being with him, and around him. He lit up my world, and I thought we would ride the sunset together, but I was so wrong. I thought he was my soul mate. I still cant get over the fact that this man is not my soul mate. I have to come to these home truths. I am getting over him, but the pain is still evident, and I still want to be with him. In the reality of the situation some men are good for us, and others are a parade to doom. He was both, and I still love him after all the pain he caused me, I am still in love with this man. What a curse for me. Im crazy as sin, but this is how I feel. If he came knocking on my door right at this moment, Id be glad to see him, but I wouldnt take him back because I am not stupid or a glutton for punishment. There are times when I stare at my phone wishing it would ring, and hed be on the other end of the line; I might run into him in the street, or he might just pop over my house. There are times I dont want to see him, and just let the memories keep me going. Hes fading surely but slowly. Hes sticks on the brink of my self-consciousness; I feel him, and true love doesnt fly away like the birds in the summer time. True love is a feeling that last forever. The truth is why did I let him go? I had no choice in the matter, and when I come back down to earth, then these reasons will become a fixture on my mind. Ill smile because this person is out of my life. How do you mend a broken heart? 1. You can find another mate. 2. Keep yourself so busy you wont think about him. 3. Call him. 4. Get over him. 5. Read a good book. 6. Go out with friends. 7. Stop thinking about him. 8. Get over the memories 9. Move on. As I try to follow these nine steps I think about the words to this song, chapter in my past, seeing someone else, feelings that I thought was gone came rushing to me at once, never got over you, Im still in love with you, I never should have let you go, its killing me because now I know; the truth hurts, I let him go, tried to get over it, messing with my mind. Chapter in my past the past is the past. I need to remember this. Its time for the future and what the future will bring. Seeing someone else of course he was dating someone else. He wasnt sitting at home waiting for me. Feelings that I thought was gone came rushing to me at once so true, butI might have feelings for him forever. Im wondering is he thinking about me. Never got over you Sometimes we have to let go. Im still in love with you Love is not enough most of the time. I never should have let you go I cant hold onto someone who doesnt want me to catch them. Its killing me because now I know I know my feelings, and I know the truth. We just cant be together. The Truth hurts the reasons why we broke up is the truth. We dont want to accept the truth, but its the only way. I let him go Our relationship could have continued the way it was. I had to end it because I wasnt getting what I wanted out of the relationship. Let him go! Tried to get over it I will in time, but its a healing process. Its like someone dying, and you never get over a death. Messing with my mind The pressure of wanting to be with him and knowing its not the right thing to do is a headache, but again, let him go! Let the memories keep you going until they eventually disappear. The Truth Is will always be my favorite song, and one day when I listen to it, Im going to have my soul mate right here with me. He will be my Truth Is. (989) Books are my passion, and writing is next to it. My website is: http://www.freewebs.com/jcarolann and take a ride with me. The Little Things in Life: Food Presentation

By Caley Walsh While it may seem silly, the appearance of a little radish rose on my salad plate has the power to tickle me from head to toe. Maybe it’s my fondness for the concept of edible art. Moreover, can you deny that a pretty dessert or any other dish just seems to taste better? Even the slightest special touches in culinary preparation and presentation transform the mere act of eating into a full-blown aesthetic experience. Sprucing up a buffet for a party or a sit-down meal for guests (or an especially spoiled loved one) is easier than you might think and makes all the difference. People will be truly dazzled by these extra little touches. Here are some ideas to get you started in the art of food presentation. Good luck! Presentation Basics Color- When it comes to color, it’s all about creating contrasts. A dish with a white sauce is going to look boring on a white plate. When it comes to “plating” food, put a few colorful vegetables next to visually bland items like mashed potatoes. Even a dollop of yogurt can look spectacular atop a bowl of split-pea soup!Chargers, the circular settings under plates, are also a great opportunity for color and contrast. They come in all different colors, textures, and materials. Nature- The best food presentation incorporates the beauty of nature. A simple vase of flowers can do so much for a table, but experiment with less common items like pinecones. Fill a vase with crabapples and pinecones for a great-smelling autumn centerpiece. Mix flowers and fruits for especially beautiful and interesting centerpieces. For example, intersperse white flowers with limes in a silver bowl, or combine bright lilies with tropical fruits. While porcelain and glass serving platters are common in food presentation, don’t forget wood! Natural and even exotic woods work beautifully to display items like breads and cheese. Odd Numbers- A good rule of thumb in any type of decorating is that an odd number of items grouped together is more visually attractive. Just as you would, for example, place a group of three pillar candles on the fireplace mantle, keep the same rule of odd numbers in mind when decorating your table or buffet and when garnishing plates.Whiteware- Nothing is as elegant or as easily adaptable as a set of basic whiteware, including white platters, plates, and white linens. You can dress it up or down for different events. On The Plate Smaller is Better- Take a cue from fancy restaurants and create smaller, more elegant portions. Slice vegetables like bell peppers into thin strips. Use plates with a smaller basin for food, but a larger rim to create the illusion of a larger portion. Arrange the food vertically or fan it outward from the center for more artistic arrangements.Garnish- While this may seem obvious, only decorate with edible food. You want people’s taste buds to respond to everything on the plate. Moreover, the garnish should correspond to predominant flavors in the dish. Garnish with sprigs of rosemary for a chicken dish with rosemary in it.Sprinkle- If a food looks boring, sprinkle on some fresh chopped herbs, nuts, or finely chopped vegetables. Squeeze Bottles- Forget the ladle! The big thing with sauces right now is to paint and drizzle designs over your food with a squeeze bottle. Drizzle thin lines of teriyaki sauce back and forth over dumplings, for example. Curls, Roses, and other Edible Accoutrements Butter Curls/RosettesHeat a butter curler under hot water for a moment and pull gently over a stick of firm butter to create curls. Dip in hot water between each curl. Use softened butter and a piping bag with a flower nozzle to create pretty butter flowers. Remember to keep chilled until right before serving!Vegetable CreationsCarrots- Use a vegetable peeler to cut strips of carrot, roll each into a spiral, and secure with a toothpick. Submerge in ice water for several hours and the carrot strip will remain curled after removing the toothpick. Cherry Tomatoes- To create a cherry tomato flower, cut a small X on the blossom side of a cherry tomato. Partially peel back the tomato skin in the four sections with a sharp knife to make four petals. Cucumber/Zucchini- Create fluting along a cucumber or zucchini slice with a fork. Green Onions- For green onion “brushes,” cut the roots and most of the top portion from a green onion and make several cuts at both ends to produce a fringe. After being submerged in ice water for a couple hours, the onion ends will curl back like brushes. Leeks- Make pretty leek “asters” by first cutting off the roots and the bottom a little. Cut into 3-4 cm parts. Using a sharp knife, make many cuts along leek but don’t split the bottom. Soak the leeks in cold water for a day and the flowers will curl out. Sprinkle with beet juice for a touch of color.Radish- Slice small triangles all around the radish and peel back the red skin to create flower petals. Or, make several cuts radiating out from the top center of the radish, soak in cold water, and the radish will “open” on its own. For a cute and simple trick, slice the radish very thin and use the round slices as petals for a flat flower. You can use a carrot slice for the center of the flower and scallions or cucumber peel for the stem.Sweet TouchesChocolate- Let a bar of chocolate come to room temperature and carefully draw a vegetable peeler along the bar to create long curling strips. Use the narrow side to create thin curls and the broad side to make bigger curls. To make chocolate leaves, find some nontoxic, broad leaves such as mint, rose, or lemon. Brush melted semi-sweet chocolate on the underside of the leaves, wiping off any that runs to the front of the leaves. Repeat layers of chocolate to make sturdier leaves. Place chocolate leaves, chocolate side up, on a baking sheet lined with wax paper, and freeze until hard. Then, simply peel away the real leaf from the chocolate leaf. Fruit- Make strawberry fans with stemmed strawberries. Simply cut many, small slices into the strawberry almost to the green stem but not quite through and then fan out the strawberry. Or for an easier trick, brush fresh fruit with a mixture of water and meringue powder, and then immediately sprinkle with (granulated) sugar for a frosted look. Sugar- Powdered sugar (or cocoa powder) can easily create designs on top of brownies or a cake. Cut out a design from a piece of sturdy paper, such as swirls or stars, and then lay the piece of paper over the dessert. Sift the powder on top and then carefully remove the paper. Voila!
